SUPPORT SCHOOLS

Our top notch schools are an investment in our children. Support efficient quality schools.  We need to focus on instruction, not construction.

The Cavalier Record.

·        Supported funding for schools, but at a tremendous cost.

·        Oversaw an era with an emphasis on construction, leading to excess school capacity.

·        Maintained student/instructor ratios.

The Woodson Alternative.

ü  Refocus priorities on instruction.

ü  Maintain student/instructor ratios.

ü  Encourage guidance and service learning programs that prepare children for the future.

ü  Strengthen parent participation in the education of their children.

The Details

Since 1999, school enrollment has increased 36%, but school expenditures have increased 64%[1].

School Enrollment and Expenditures, 1999-2006

During this period, total expenditures per student increased 21%, from $8,542 per student in 1999 to $10,314 per student in 2006[2].

Capital spending on bricks and mortar nearly doubled in the last eight years, increasing 90% from $33 million in 1996 to $63 million in 2006. Spending on instruction increased at a lower rate of 79%, from $113.7 million in 1999 to $203.6 million in 2006[3].

The emphasis on building at the expense of instruction has created a situation where we now have excess capacity in our schools (nearly 4,000 empty slots) while student-teacher ratios have just held steady, hovering around 13 students per instructional personnel.

The Woodson Alternative

Support efficient, quality schools.

ü  Prioritize learning over construction by focusing taxpayer dollars on instructional personnel.

ü  Maintain student teacher ratios.

ü  Place additional counselors in middle and high schools, to give students better guidance and better prepare them for life’s challenges.

ü  Carefully evaluate capital spending plans.

ü  Enhance student participation in community service programs, in order to create better citizens and give students real life experiences.

ü  Strengthen parent participation in the education by supporting parent organizations.
